Chapter I: Amendments to Decree-Law No. 18 of March 17, 2020, converted with amendments by Law No. 27 of April 24, 2020
PARENTAL LEAVE AND BABYSITTING BONUS FOR WORKERS WITH CHILDREN UP TO 12 YEARS OF AGE pursuant to Article 23 (Article 72)
Parental leave for working parents in the private sector has been extended for up to 30 days.
Therefore, from March 5 through July 31, 2020, employees may take special COVID leave for a total of 30 days, either as a continuous period or in separate blocks, replacing the 15 days previously provided for.
For working parents any periods of parental leave, even if extended (pursuant to Articles 32–33 of Legislative Decree No. 151/2001), taken by parents during the period of suspension, are converted into special COVID leave. This period or these days are not counted toward parental leave nor compensated as parental leave.
The entitlement to special COVID leave is granted alternately to both parents, for a total of thirty days, and is subject to the condition that the household does not include another parent receiving income support in the event of suspension or termination of employment, or another parent who is unemployed or not working.
Parents who are employees in the private sector with children under the age of 16, provided that there is no other parent in the household receiving income support in the event of suspension or termination of employment, or that there is no non-working parent are entitled to take leave from work for the period during which early childhood education services and educational activities in schools of all levels are suspended, without receiving compensation or having contributions credited, with protection against dismissal and the right to retain their job.
As alternative to special COVID leave , the same eligible workers may still choose to receive the bonus for the purchase of babysitting services, within total maximum limit of 1,200 euros, in lieu of the 600 euros initially provided for.
