Parental leave allowance from 30% to 80%

News n.14/2023

Subject: Increase in parental leave allowance from 30% to 80% of salary for a maximum duration of one month and new event codes

In a recent News, INPS (National Social Security Institute) has issued operating instructions for increasing parental leave compensation from 30% to 80% of salary for a maximum duration of one month and up to the child's sixth birthday, a measure introduced by Law No. 197 of 29 December 2023 (2023 Budget Law) in Article 1, paragraph 359.

The increase in allowance applies exclusively to employed workers, therefore excluding all other categories of workers.

Consequently, if one parent is an employed worker and the other parent is not, the month of parental leave compensated at 80% of salary is only due to the employed parent.

A month is not added to the total number of months of parental leave: an increase in the allowance is only foreseen for one month of the three due to each parent, which cannot be transferred to the other, provided that the monthly payment compensated at 80% of salary is used within the child's sixth birthday (or within six years of entering the family, in the case of adoption or foster care).

INPS emphasizes that the month compensated at 80% of salary is only one for both parents and can be used in a split manner between them or by only one of them.
