Subject: Urgent Regional Ordinances in Force for Public Health and Hygiene Reasons: Work in the Agricultural and Horticultural Sectors, on Outdoor Construction Sites, and in Quarries, Under Conditions of Prolonged Exposure to the Sun

For over a week now, Italy has been experiencing an extreme heat wave, which is causing serious incidents, including, unfortunately, the deaths of workers on the job due to exposure to the sun. The persistent high temperatures have led many regions to implement preventive measures for those working in fields, on construction sites, in quarries, and in nurseries.

The regions where the ordinances are already in effect are Veneto, Lazio, Umbria, Calabria, Sicily, Abruzzo, Tuscany, Campania, Sardinia, Puglia, and Lombardy.

In particular, we would like to draw your attention to Lombardy Region Ordinance No. 348 of July 1, which has ordered a halt to work activities in construction sites, quarries, farms, and nurseries from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., in light of the prolonged heat waves, which are also expected to continue in the coming days. The President of the Lombardy Region signed the emergency ordinance aimed at protecting the health and safety of workers exposed to high temperatures, and the decision was made following a meeting with labor unions, convened on Monday, June 30, by the Regional Councilor for Welfare, Giulio Bertolaso.
