Subject: Urgent regional ordinances active for public hygiene and health reasons: work activities in the agricultural and floricultural sector, outdoor construction sites, and quarries, under conditions of prolonged sun exposure.
For over a week, Italy has been affected by an excessive heatwave, causing serious events, including unfortunately worker deaths at work due to sun exposure. The persistence of high temperatures has led many regions to adopt preventive measures for those working in fields, construction sites, quarries, and nurseries.
The regions where the ordinances are already in effect are Veneto, Lazio, Umbria, Calabria, Sicily, Abruzzo, Tuscany, Campania, Sardinia, Puglia, and Lombardy.
Specifically, we wish to draw your attention to Ordinance No. 348 of July 1st from the Lombardy Region, which has mandated the suspension of work activities in the construction, quarrying, agricultural, and horticultural sectors from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM, in consideration of the prolonged heatwaves, which are also forecast for the coming days. The President of the Lombardy Region signed the urgent ordinance aimed at safeguarding the health and safety of workers exposed to high temperatures. This decision was made following a meeting with trade unions, convened on Monday, June 30th, by the Welfare Councillor, Giulio Bertolaso.
